Scope Change Chart

How has the amount of open work changed since we started?

A waterfall chart. The first bar, "Initial", is the number of work items that were open when the window began. Then one bar per period shows the net change: up for "Net added", down for "Net removed", floating on the running total. A period without net change has no bar. The last bar, "Final", is where the running total ends.

What counts as added and removed

A work item is added when it is created and removed when it is resolved. Each bar is added minus removed for that period; hover over it to see both. Work items that leave the scope another way, for example moved to another project, dropped from the saved filter or deleted, are not counted as removed. The header says so: "Removed counts only resolved work items, so the final total is a lower bound."

Initial and final scope

"Initial" is Jira's count of the work items open at the start of the window; "Final" is Initial plus everything added minus everything removed. Jira's count is approximate, and the header says so: "Initial and final are approximate (Jira's count)." If it cannot be retrieved, the Initial and Final bars are left out and the chart says: "Initial and final unavailable: Jira's count of open work items could not be retrieved. The changes per period are unaffected. Reload the page to try again." The running total then starts at zero and shows the change since the start of the window, so it goes below zero when more work items were resolved than created.

Periods

One bar per period, weekly by default. The first period is complete, and the header shows where it starts. The last one is still running, and its tooltip says so. See Periods.
